CoolSculpting® employs a process known as Cryolipolysis. (“Cryo” = cold + “lipo” = fat cells + “lysis” = cell death and removal.) During treatment, stubborn fat deposits are subjected to controlled cooling.
The controlled cooling safely penetrates the skin. Subcutaneous fat cells begin to freeze. This ruptures the cell’s membrane. The ruptured fat cells are flagged for apoptosis –cell death and removal.
Over the passage of several weeks, the body’s immune system gathers the demolished fat cells. Frozen fat cells ultimately exit the body as waste. These fat cells cannot return or be replaced.
Psoriasis is a common and chronic skin disease that involves an issue with your immune system causing skin cells to grow faster than usual. Because the cells are growing in days instead of weeks, people with psoriasis will experience flare-ups of scaly and itchy patches of skin. The visible dry patches of skin are directly caused by the rapid creation of cells.
These scaly-like rashes can form anywhere on the body, but most commonly form on the:
Psoriasis isn’t a fully understood disease yet, but most researchers believe that both genetics and environmental issues are the biggest contributing factors. This condition does not have a known cure yet and flares up for a few weeks or few months at a time.
The most common symptoms of psoriasis are:
For more severe or untreated cases, plaques can form with a silvery-white coating on top. Plaques can vary in sizes and start to merge together over larger areas of skin. These can become uncomfortable and painful if you don’t seek professional treatment.
Many people have a family history of psoriasis which makes them predisposed genetically. For most, psoriasis starts in childhood. But, it’s possible for some adults to go many years without showing any signs or symptoms that they have it and then an event or some sort of environmental factor ends up triggering it for the first time.
The main risk factors for developing it as an adult are family history and smoking nicotine.
What triggers flare-ups will vary from person-to-person, so we recommend keeping a journal about each flare-up experience. Taking note of medications, what you eat, lifestyle, and any other notable detail will help you track and narrow down what sensitivities are triggering you.
A medical doctor or board-certified dermatologist can assess your skin, nails, and scalp and typically recognize psoriasis pretty quickly. At times, this condition can seem like eczema or a type of dermatitis until properly diagnosed, so it’s important to seek an examination from a trusted medical professional.
Though a cure isn’t known yet, several treatment methods and lifestyle changes have proven to be effective when controlling the flare-ups. The goals of treatment for psoriasis are to:
Depending on the severity of your condition, we may recommend topical medications, prescription oral medications, or a type of light therapy to treat symptoms. Many patients opt to do a combination of treatment methods in addition to major lifestyle changes.
Some lifestyle changes that have proven to be effective in lessening symptoms and frequency of flare-ups include:
Unfortunately, psoriasis can cause you to be at a higher risk for more serious diseases. It’s very important to live as healthy of a lifestyle as possible and work with your dermatologist on your individual treatment plan.
Some of the diseases patients may be at a higher risk for are:
